Solanco student artists receive distinguished recognition

Beautiful artwork by Sam Root, Francis O’Connell and other Solanco students is on exhibit at Lancaster art museums; some artwork will advance to national adjudication!

The incredible talents of art students at Solanco High School and George A. Smith Middle School have earned them 92 total awards, including some of the most distinguished special recognition that is presented by the Scholastic Art Awards and Lancaster County Young Artists. Among the high honors received by Solanco students are the Charles X. Carlson Senior Portfolio Scholarship Award, Art Portfolio Gold Award, Art Portfolio Silver Award, Les Rinehart 3D Award, and the Michelangelo Award. In addition, the impressive list of awards won by Solanco art students include two Awards of Excellence, one Merit Award, 27 Gold Awards, 15 Silver Awards and 42 Honorable Mention/Exhibition Awards!

Following is a list of their impressive collection of awards:

  • Sam Root: Charles X. Carlson Senior Portfolio Scholarship Award – a total of 23 awards and 22 works in exhibitions
  • Michaela Trimble:  Award of Excellence, the Les Rinehart 3-D Award, two Gold Awards and one Exhibition Award
  • Joshua Cartwright:  Merit Award, two Gold Awards, two Silver Awards, one Honorable Mention
  • Madison Montalto:  Michelangelo Award, two Gold Awards
  • Jani Hileman: Two Gold Awards, one Silver Award, three Exhibition Awards

Solanco High School senior Sam Root was one of the top artists in both the Scholastic Art Awards and the Lancaster County Young Artists! Sam has earned the Charles X. Carlson Senior Portfolio Scholarship Award, which is awarded by the Lancaster County Young Artists to only one senior portfolio in the exhibition!

The Scholastic Art Awards has presented Sam with the Art Portfolio Gold Award in honor of eight of his works, which will advance to national adjudication! Sam has also won an Award of Excellence (awarded by the Lancaster County Young Artists to the top five works in the exhibition), eight Gold Awards, four Silver Awards and eight Exhibition/Honorable Mention Awards!

Solanco High School senior Francis O’Connell received the Art Portfolio Silver Award (eight works will be exhibited), two Gold Awards (advance to national adjudication), one Silver Award and one Honorable Mention Award.

Student artwork that received Senior Portfolio Awards, Special Awards, Gold Awards, Silver Awards and Honorable Mention Awards from the Scholastic Art Awards are now on exhibit at the Lancaster Museum of Art. The exhibition will be March 1 – 24. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

An exhibition for student art that has received Senior Portfolio Scholarship Awards, Special Awards and Gold Awards from Lancaster County Young Artists is being held at the Ware Center, Millersville University Lancaster, at 42 North Prince Street. Hours for the March 1 – 24 exhibition are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Silver Award and Exhibition Award winning artwork will be on exhibit at Mulberry Art Studios at 21 North Mulberry Street in Lancaster. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, while visitation on Saturdays and Sundays is by appointment. Call 295-1949.
